Artist's Description

The Tin Mal Mosque is a mosque located in the High Atlas mountains 100 km from Marrakesh, Morocco. The Tin Mal Mosque was finished around 1153–54, partly as a memorial to Ibn Toumert who started constructing it in 1125 as a Koranic school (tinmil means “school” in ancient Berber), and also as his own family’s mausoleum. The edifice is one of the two mosques in Morocco open to non-Muslims, the other being the Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca. The Tin Mal mosque was added to the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List on 1 July 1995 in the Cultural category.
